April 17, 2010 — On April 17th 1996, nineteen landless Brazilian peasants living in the Amazon were massacred while demanding land so they could produce food. Since the massacre, April 17th has become the International Day of Peasant Struggle. It is a day when people around the world demand food sovereignty and peasants' rights. Each year shows the growing strength and diversity of the global resistance to the dominant model of food and agriculture that multinational companies impose on us all.
This year, activists from around Western Washington commemorated the International Day of Peasant Struggle at the University District Farmer's Market in Seattle. The event celebrated how small farmers in the U.S. and around the world have united against the corporate control of the food system. Activists from the Community Alliance for Global Justice and other groups used street theater and music to educate the community about how multinational corporations control agriculture and food. Activists also alerted the community about how the Seattle-based Gates Foundation is uniting with agricultural corporations such as Monsanto and the US government to create global food and agricultural policies.
