Sept 20th: Stand with Us against Tuff Shed

author: Seattle Solidarity Network

Stand with workers against corporate abuse at Tuff Shed.

When: 11am, Saturday September 20th
Where: Tuff Shed, 17500 W. Valley HWY, Tukwila

Tomania Dunlop, a construction worker who's been active with the Seattle Solidarity Network, recently had a serious on-the-job injury while putting up a shed for Tuff Shed Inc. Her weight came down on her leg at a bad angle, it tore her cartilage, and she collapsed. She couldn't walk and had to be taken to the hospital. She called to tell her boss she'd had a bad injury and wouldn't be able to work, and hospital staff informed the company that a Workers' Compensation claim was being filed. A few days later, Tuff Shed fired her.

Since then, Tuff Shed managers have been lying to Labor & Industries and saying - against all witnesses - that Tomania's injury did not happen on the job. They've been doing everything possible to try to block her Workers Compensation claim. If they have their way, Tomania will get stuck with a massive bill for her initial hospital care and for the surgery she still needs, not to mention the black mark of a firing on her employment history. She and her baby daughter could find themselves in a very deep hole.

Why would Tuff Shed fire, attack, and abuse a good worker like this? Apparently they want to save some money on insurance.

It's time to take action. We have already sent letters and group delegations both to regional manager Dave Bednarik and to corporate HQ in Denver, where the owner, Tom Saurey, is based. They have refused to respond. Now it's time to bring the true nature of this company to the attention of their customers and the general public.

Tomania and the rest of the Solidarity Network are asking all individuals and organizations who are willing, to join us in picketing Tuff Shed on Saturday Sept 20th. A handful of people will not have much impact, but a crowd might. Please, help us make it a crowd!

Employers HATE following the law

I worked for a workers' comp attorney for nearly four years and I've seen the outrageous lies that employees tell to keep their injured workers from receiving proper medical treatment and compensation. And the laws are set up in their favor. The only way we can fight back is to FIGHT BACK. The reason we have workers' comp in the first place is because workers in Germany 100 years ago took to the streets and demanded that employers pay when workers get injured. Prior to that, if you got injured, you were on your own. If you got your arm caught in a machine and had it torn off, too bad, so long. Sound familiar? We need to start telling each other and ourselves that WE make the profits so WE should get a bigger share. WE make society run and WE should get free universal health care.
