Report Back From Olympia Mayday March

author: Anonymous
May 01, 2008 18:06

May Day -- In Olympia there was a march that followed a rally in Sylvester Park. During the rally people spoke about the plight of immigrant workers and the raids by ICE carried out in our communities. The hip-hop group Sound Asylum performed a short set and then the crowd marched up Capitol Blvd towards the Washington State Capitol Building.

When the march reached the Capitol, people flooded inside. Some people threw up tags on the marble walls and others chanted in front of the Governor's office. Afterward, people listened to speakers on the Capitol steps. The outline of a large circle (A) was still visible on the Roman columns above the speakers.

The march then headed to City Hall where people listened to more speakers. When the march set off again, it headed down one-way 4th Avenue into the heart of Downtown Olympia. When the march passed the US Bank, multiple rocks were thrown and multiple windows were shattered. The march continued onward and soon passed a Bank of America. Multiple rocks were thrown, multiple windows were broken. And then the police attacked.

Three people were singled out and arrested. As of now this author is only aware of these three. Undercover cops pulled out their pistols and pointed them at people. Many people were hit and shoved by the police. The crowd stayed around the police and their cars as more police arrived. One officer started firing into the crowd with pepper balls at point-blank range. When the police had taken away the hostages the crowd went to the jail.

All solidarity is welcome.

More info soon, but not from me.

Fuck the City, fuck OPD, fuck the State!

What exactly did u expect?

You all marched past US Bank, threw rocks and broke windows. You all marched past Bank of America, threw rocks and broke windows. Then the police "attacked".

How did you expect the police to react, after you all committed vandalism under the guise of a protest march? They damage private property and then complain when the police break them up and arrest some of them. Did you expect them to just sit there and watch?

geez

You are a belly-rubbing proto-facist in the works, above commenter. You really think threatening the lives of citizens who have a VALID reason to fight these institutions due to the economic TERRORISM they cause (on a global scale too- under the guise of a corporation).

Oh yeah- they weren't complaining. I haven't heard one comment/article that alludes that the pigs used excessive force. It was a matter-of-fact status report.

Am I surprised that they pigs defended corporate property with violence? Are you kidding? Seems like every time the pigs gather- theres violence. I haven't witnessed that with gatherings of citizens (oh yeah whom by the way have the right AND responsibility to defend their constitutional rights - by any means necessary....or did you forget that too you LAZY APATHETIC BRAIN-DEAD ENABLER.)

Get a life kid.

Just a bunch of rich white kids pretending to be poor and oppressed so they can get laid by hot hippie chicks.

this is so fucked up

how does throwing rocks at bank windows in the name of immigrant rights equate with solidarity with oppressed communities? answer: it doesn't. when things like this happen, it makes me ashamed to be part of the radical community in olympia. we need to develop ways of holding people accountable to one another within our community. it's no surprise to me that when things like this happen, immigrants don't feel safe coming to our city for May Day and instead choose to go to Seattle.

I'm all for overthrowing capitalism and along with that, the state, but there are ways to do that, that are effective and sustainable and there are ways that get people arrested and fucked with by the pigs unnecessarily. if you want to just fuck shit up, then do it on your own time. don't do it during a worker/immigrant solidarity march. organize something actually. maybe these people will be really active in organizing around jail support and raising legal defense funds. maybe they'll organize around police accountability or to find alternatives to police in our community. somehow i doubt it. i want to see our community coming together rather than being divided by shit like this.

anyway, there were 6-7 people arrested and the arraignment for at least one of them is today friday may 2nd at 3:30 PM Thurston County Courthouse Building 2.

You all have nothing going for you. Get a job and do something productive with your lives.

sally darity, being a bit presumptuous...

"how does throwing rocks at bank windows in the name of immigrant rights equate with solidarity with oppressed communities?" you are right, it does not. but i dont remember any one saying that it did. this was a mayday march. mayday remember. a day of struggle, a day of solidarity, and a day hopefully of action. the march that took people down 4th was not the same as the one that took people back to the park. this was a breakaway of sorts.

befor the bank of america was attacked people yelled as loud as they could to expose BofA of their envolvment in mountain top removal in the mid-west. for more info on the horrendous efects of mountain top removal see  http://www.mountainjusticesummer.org/facts/steps.php .
also if you wish to have a better understanding of bank of americas involvment in this industry, this is a farely good resource.  http://itsgettinghotinhere.org/2007/08/26/national-day-of-action-against-bank-of-americas-coal-investments-aug-31/

and believe me(or not, it does not change things that are true) there are many other reasons to retaliate on one the the most esential institutions of capitalist infrastructure. we may not agree on these things, though you say you are all for overthrowing the capitalist system and the state. this leads me to assume that you may call yourself anarchist. maybe you dont. and thats fine. i am trying not to be as presumptuous as you were in that post which hopefully does not mirror you as a person.

"if you want to just fuck shit up, then do it on your own time. don't do it during a worker/immigrant solidarity march." again, how about those who do not fall into this category, the homeless, those who do not wish to sell their labor for capital, indigenous peoples. i knew yesterday that accusations of all white, male, heterosexual, rich anarchists that ruined "our" march would come. it was just a matter of time i suppose. i guess i am increasingly getting fed up with post like this. posts that turn into debates. so i am done. but lastly your "maybe these people will be really active in organizing around jail support and raising legal defense funds. maybe they'll organize around police accountability or to find alternatives to police in our community. some how i doubt it." SOME HOW I DOUBT IT! thats a good way to our community come together right... hope your their at three thirty in room 2. all of those kidnaped from us, along with our loved comrades, will be arraigned today. i hope you were not once a friend or comrade of mine, becouse people should expect to be held accountable for their actions and their very strong words. and i am found of accountability.

No one wanted to just fuck shit up, as you put it, you dumb asshole. In case you are are too stupid to use your eyes (which you are) ONLY these large banks were attacked. The coal companies that bank of america funds destroys people's land and homes by blowing up mountains in APPALACHIA! to get coal. I guess they are not worthy of solidarity. I guess people hit those banks for no fucking reason, right?

You probably never do anything yourself, hence your fiery little criticisms. the immigrants right groups had a safe, family friendly event in seattle. they didnt come to olympia because last year people climbed the statue in the capitol and hung flags on the stone soldiers. They felt their safety was jeopardized. this is fine. they made a choice to not come back.

stop tokenizing immigrants. I dont just suspect, I know you are white. Do you get more points if Olympia "gets" the immigrants. Does your activist status go up when they come?

You are the kinds of assholes who divide communities by spouting shit like your comment. You do nothing! You just talk and talk and talk and do jack shit but help the pigs.

May Day is for all of us, not just academic little pricks like you. Have some fucking courage for once and stop this indymedia bullshit. if you have something to say, fucking say it! its easy to criticize from a key board or from behind a book. its hard to risk something. which you never do, despite your revolutionary posturing.

people are in jail and all you do is spit, you fucking coward.

I love how these Chickenhawk internet tough guys come out of the woodwork...

...and yet, when I'm at a protest, looking for one of them to stomp, they're no where to be seen.

Anyway, thank you my sisters and brothers! It made my day seeing those Bank of America curtains fluttering in the wind...

A Simple Question
Posted by: Terry at May 02, 2008 17:32

Simple question: What the fuck did you accomplish by vandalizing shit?

^_^
Posted by: Anon A at May 02, 2008 18:17

First off, attacked it the best way to put it.
The police weren't really able to go after the people who were doing the vandalism so instead they began attacking everyone else.

As far as the accomplishments:
1) Most May Day marches go on every year and no one cares.
Even though the events may or may not be linked, at least people are talking about sanctuary city. Before yesterday no one knew or cared what that was about.
2) It was an act of solidarity. Someone else covered this above me.
3) Some people let out some much needed rage. In fact, I think it was an example of someone who had a problem with a company/situation but, because of the way capitalism is designed, was unable to change things, so they took matters int their own hands instead of being complacent.

Break Shit
Posted by: X-treme (A) at May 02, 2008 23:29

Way to go fellow X-treme anarchists! We sure showed Oly what May Day is about. Its fucking rad to get away puting graffiti on the capital building. Its way cool to smash some bank windows! And I use to think that snowboarding and skating were where it was at.

Next year workers will think twice before trying to organize some lame event about working class struggle. Fuck the workers; including those who had to clean up after us.

Insurrection Now!

MAY DAY...what did you expect?
Posted by: Taryn G. at May 03, 2008 02:09

In the interest of trying to keep a community undivided over rock throwing and defacing of buildings with symbolism I urge folks to remember the passion that some folks have heaving up inside themselves.

When you are just starting out you may be fooled into thinking that some acts of violence will work but as you go along you begin to see it really is "big problem" on a "grand scale" run by the same class over and over again. We must break through with a meaningful solidarity. Once we have their attention then we will need great orators to communicate the "great agenda" and the "solutions". We have to get stronger in this.

I would much rather see folks targeting the people who are the string pullers of all the puppets in this imperial state of humanity we live in rather than throwing rocks at windows (even though Bank of America has some serious problems). Put some of that passion to work finding out who these folks are and make their lives difficult until they begin to give the "people" of the world what is their fair share.

We must have an agenda to work not just reactions to a squeezing economic boa constricter around all of our necks. There is plenty for all of us. 'They' like to try to divide us along all kinds of lines of diversity but we all know the truth...we are all one here on the blue planet with the same birthright "to be". However, we do need our fair share! We must regulate energy industries, banking systems, and begin to build infrastructure of programs on a global scale that serve to educate, sustain and raise up the human family. We need to demand right now a retooling of car industry to hydrogen or electric (say no to bio fuels!)...mandate it! Oil companies should be forced to pay higher taxes...these taxes should be used as subsidies to the new innovative companies who will provide the "new" model of transportation. We could also use this money to create work programs that work with local energy companies to help homeowners convert to solar & wind energy producing setups to their properties. Next we could begin community hydrophonic gardens in every city in the U.S.A. or for that matter the world.

Slowly but surely we can gain our independence together from the elitist corporate feudalist imperialists that have hi-jacked all the countries in the world.

It CAN BE DONE!

I'm very proud of Olympians even when sometimes there is a few rif raff that aren't completely non-violent (hey not everyone is at the same level of "understanding" at the same time).

Solidarity,
Taryn G.

p.s. f*** you NSA for crashing my computer the first time I tried to post this (computers just don't restart themselves for no reason as one is posting to a "political" website! Interesting how you pay so much attention to what I do...I'm not afraid of you anymore! Just know there are thousands others out there just like me in my "understanding" level! Solidarity INDEED!

Right on, Sally Darity
Posted by: Someone with an actual analysis at May 03, 2008 08:24

Sally Darity, if you have bothered to come back to this ridiculous chatter, I want to tell you that you are right on. Don't listen to these fuck-shit-up kids, ignore their temper tantrums. They won't be around in five years anyways. Keep up doing the actual work, and let the glory mongers move on to the next pointless insurrection. The anarchist movement sheds these types by the time they are twenty-five. The folks with a real analysis of capitalism, oppression, and how to fight it stick around. I'm sure you know this, but these kids are irrelevant, don't let their foaming at the mouth bother you.

Think Sally
Posted by: mal de santo at May 03, 2008 09:16

I am really in disagreement about the fact that immigrants are afraid of Olympia just because a couple windows were broken. Don't you think it's time to show a more radical display of unrest towards this system. Or are you patriotic enough to still believe that this large scale "democracy" based on majority rather than consensus works just fine. Either way there are reasons I agree, as well as disagree with the actions. I think that possibly it could have been saved for a more radical, and impactful event. Yet do still not think that it was wrong in any sense. An eye for an eye my friends. We will be here in 5 years, we will be here in 50. We are the workers who run your city. There will be hell given, and possibly blood shed. We are the struggle continued from hearts of our dead. So we take the state like we take to the streets. Sister
understand that revolution wasn't meant to be discreet.

so many others, some whom i know, putting the soccerthug anarchist crusties trust funders in perspective.

you know, many of us set down comfortably and productively from the sorts these youth so vilely despise. i see it as confusing personal parent issues with class issues and generational power disparity issues. it will pass. i just hope the "by 25 years of age" is not to overoptimistic about the age of reason< the age of recovery< the age of joining the adult strugle< not the frentic youth acting out cum protest.

as to immigrants mixing in the fray... would you stick your neck in where cops were sure to be busting roudies? lots of exposure for little gain. Better for the imigrants san document to mix with religious, clean mouthed grannies and the like...better role models for their children to see. Would you take the kids to dangerous riots when you could go to a concrt?

Its only in the youthfull mind that the views of others is so readily dismissed as pertinent. Its lack of what is called "theory of mind." where a matured person realizes that his rules are not those of everyone. his/her values are not unioversal. goals are not all the same, and particularly, paths to general goals can be at odds. Child sees all as himself. It usually passes.

Anyway, thanks all above who renew my belief in an anarcho community with dignity , maturity and patience for dealing with the crap we must deal with in this so gone wrong world.
