URGENT: Port of Tacoma Action Sun 3/4 @ 9pm

author: blaire fogerty / images by TPMR
Mar 04, 2007 02:09

Saturday night, 30-40 regional activists observed multiple convoys from Ft Lewis coming through the Port of Tacoma to be shipped to Iraq. Riot cops had a big presence, probably 30 or so. Activists had a presence there to show that we do not want the military using our port. We need more people!

Another action is planned Sunday night @ 9pm for the next expected set of convoys. The more people that come, the more of an effect we can have. If we have enough people, we can possibly take direct action and stop or slow down the militarization of our port.

We need people! Let's stop the military from using our port!

There is a teach-in about the Iraq war during the day in Tacoma, including a discussion about the port militarization, with a free Riot Folk! show afterwards. So come down to Tacoma for the day, and we can find you a place to stay if you need to spend the night. In addition, there are actions planned for the whole week. For more details about the teach-in and this week, see http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2007/03/258076.shtml

It's not only possible but quite probabale we can delay or even stop the shipments from coming through Tacoma. All we need is a large presence. That was perhaps the most frustrating thing last year during the Port of Olympia protests: people were not there when we needed them the most. All we needed at one point was 100 people total to take non-violent direct action to stop the military convoys. We should really take advantage of the privilege we have - if this were Iraq, we'd got shot from being even a mile away from a large US military presence. If the weapons ship out, PEOPLE WILL DIE...

(There should be a lot of folks there tonight. Bring instruments, warm clothes and blankets, cameras... for good times.)

Also, bring still cameras and video cameras.

To get to Port of Tacoma:

I-5 to exit 136 B (Port of Tacoma)
Follow to Port of Tacoma Rd
Take Port of Tacoma Rd until E 11th.
Left on E 11th
Follow until Milwaukee. Find our people and park there.

If you can't come at 9:00pm, come later. We'll still need you. Come later this week.

-tear it down-

What would you rather do?
Posted by: t at Mar 05, 2007 11:53

From the looks of this you'd rather have our American soldiers stuck in the desert with no supplies?! You may not agree with the war, but there are thousands of American soldiers (mostly kids remember) who are over there, whether we or they like it or not. Are we to leave them empty-handed because you'd rather not see a military ship in the Port of Tacoma? Way to support your fellow man.

What Do I Want To Do?

What a whiner.

Stopping the military from utilizing the Port of Tacoma or the Port of Olympia won't leave soldiers unarmed in the desert. What it will do is to remind warmongers like yourself that the majority of Americans want this war to stop -- and we are willing to resist the military to do it.

Protesters call soldiers douche bags
Posted by: Spc. Smith at Mar 05, 2007 14:06

If you watch the youtube video you can hear the protesters calling the soldiers douche bags and other names. While name calling certainly won't hurt anyone; don't believe for a minute that these protesters in anyway support the individual soldier and are just opposed to the war.
Taunt the soldiers. Attack the police. This was NOT a non-violent demonstration.

Protest

Are you protesting the administration's policy on the war, the military, or both? Sounds like you are a bit confused on who your efforts should be directed towards.

Don't be mad at the cops doing their jobs.
Posted by: Ticked off at the morons at Mar 05, 2007 17:19

What a bunch of morons. The police were stopping the protesters from trying to lie down in the road to stop the strykers. The only ones arrested were the ones who went over the line. The ones who got hurt were non-compliant with the police. The guy who got dragged had chosen to go limp. The protesters who stayed out of the road didn't get arrested because they're allowed to stand there and yell whatever they want, even if it's garbage. The police were protecting the troops (helping the military vehicles get sent overseas) and they were protecting the moron protesters (keeping them out of harm's way and out of the road.) I'm sure they would have much rather been at home than out at night having a bunch of idiots yelling at them. I am appreciative of the policemen and the service they provide all of us.

We are protesting the war as a whole.

To Joe Citizen: we are protesting the war as a whole. Sure we are against the administration's policy. But the administrators are not listening; typical two-hours-on-a-metropolitan-street-making-no-tangible-change protests for the past five years have shown this. Therefore, we are appealing to our brothers and sisters on the other side of the fence: please think about whether you want to go or not. We support war resisters like Lt. Ehren Watada. We care about you, and don't want you or your families to be hurt. We want there to be a better way for you to live and not have to kill others in the process. We are offering our solidarity, if you will have it.

where do you people come from?
Posted by: Tacoma Aroma at Mar 05, 2007 23:04

If you all support the war so much, why arent you active duty? You support something but do nothing to show it, all talk.

People are dying because of actions like this that go uninterrupted. Trying to stop murder isnt something that should be criticized, instead it should be directed at armchair patriots..

"you can hear the protesters calling the soldiers douche bags and other names". Someone was yelling at the soldiers that their officers were douche bags, I think most of the soldiers would agree with them. But that is a moot point. Why should we support paid killers for the oil companies? I support them when they decide not to fight!

Protest in Tacoma
Posted by: Joe Citizen at Mar 06, 2007 01:29

anarchistte, you do make some good points and realize you do care about "all" of us. I also want the war to end. One can still protest but not hate the soliders.

Tacoma Aroma, I did serve in the Army and recently did a tour in Iraq. Your point is a bit confusing. So instead of debating about the war, you want people who are at odds with you to join the military and fight overseas?

Joe,

Im all for debate dont get me wrong; but it seems to me that if folks support war so much, they should enlist and fight this thing they praise so much..while the people who dont support war would try to hamper the war efforts. Fight war not wars, ya know? Whether we like it or not, we are responsible for letting this happen. More actions like this would prevent this whole ordeal from continuing. See you all on Friday, and I dont know about anyone else, but Im not getting fucking shot.

since we are accomplishing nothing...
Posted by: che guevara at Mar 06, 2007 22:23

let's call it a night and go get laid.

we haven't stopped shit. we haven't convinced one soldier not to go to fight in this illegal war. we're nothing more than a bunch of clowns with cardbaord signs. fuck it i'm going to grab a joint and go find something useful to do until somebody comes up with a plan to actually do something.

The Surest Sign of Success

is when the right wing war mongers crawl out from under their rock to disparage what you are doing. Keep up the good work all true patriots and dissenters of the war. Those who really care about human life are on the move and the tide is with us.

To all those who seek to prepetuate this criminal war under the guise of supporting the troops, we see through your hypocrisy, lies and cowardice. We struggle against this war because we too have loved ones fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and friends in harms way in Iraq. You have no monopoly, special ownership or insight to this tragic war. EVERYONE IS SUFFERRING. This government has consistently lied about how mnay troops have been injured. the true figure stretches over 150,000 troops injured. Over 650,000 innocent civilians DEAD!

These Truths speak for themselves.

This War will endand this president will be held accountable.
