A recent poll shows six in ten Americans think a new world war is coming: the same poll says about 50 percent approve of the dropping of the atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. Somewhat inexplicably, about two-thirds say nuking those two cities was "unavoidable." One can only wonder, then, what their reaction will be to this ominous news, revealed in a recent issue of The American Conservative by intelligence analyst Philip Giraldi:

"The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney's office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at the implications of what they are doing – that Iran is being set up for an unprovoked nuclear attack – but no one is prepared to damage his career by posing any objections."

Two points leap out at the reader – or, at least, this reader – quite apart from the moral implications of dropping nukes on Iran. The first is the completely skewed logic: if Iran has nothing to do with 9/11-II, then why target Tehran? As in Iraq, it's all a pretext: only this time, the plan is to use nuclear weapons. We'll wipe out the entire population of Iran's capital city because, as Paul Wolfowitz said in another context, "it's doable."

The other weird aspect of this "nuke Iran" story is the triggering mechanism: a terrorist attack in the U.S. on the scale of 9/11. While it is certain that our government has developed a number of scenarios for post-attack action, one has to wonder: why develop this plan at this particular moment? What aren't they telling us?

I shudder to think about it.

The more I look at it, and the more I think of it, the more I sense a monumental evil casting its shadow over the world, and I have to tell you, it makes me wonder how much more time I want to spend on this earth. In my more pessimistic moments, I doubt whether we can avoid the horrific fate that seems to await us just around the next corner, the next moment, looming over the globe like a gigantic devil stretching its wings and blotting out the sun.

It seems to me that the question of whether life is really worth living anymore is inextricably bound up with the question of whether or not these madmen can be stopped. If not, then the only alternative is to live it up while we can and laugh defiantly in the face of the apocalypse. Why write columns, why comment at all, if we can't have any effect on the outcome? On the other hand, some ask

"Surely the New York Times and the Washington Post can find a lede here: 'US has plan to nuke Tehran if another 9/11.' Can we get at least a bloody story out of this?"

Might I suggest another lede?: "Armageddon approaches." Or perhaps, for the literary-mind secularists among us: "After many a summer dies mankind."

Where oh where is the "mainstream" media on this? That's a laughable question, because the answer is heartbreakingly obvious: they are nowhere to be found, and for a very good reason. As the Valerie Plame case is making all too clear, the MSM has been a weapon in the hands of the War Party at every step on the road to World War IV. It's an American tradition. As William Randolph Hearst famously put it to an employee in the run-up to the Spanish-American conflict of 1898:

"You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war."

Any objective examination of the Anglo-American media's role as a megaphone for this administration's "talking points" would have to conclude that the Hearst school of journalism has been dominant since well before the invasion of Iraq. Aside from the post-9/11 hysteria that effectively swept away all pretenses of a critical stance, the MSM was well acclimated to simply reiterating the U.S. government line on matters of war and peace all through the Clinton era, when friendly media coverage of the Balkans and numerous other Clintonian interventions habituated the press corps to a certain mindset. By the time the Bush administration set out on a campaign of deception designed to lie us into invading and occupying Iraq, the MSM was largely reconciled to playing the role of the government's amen corner.

With the U.S. and British media in the pocket of the Powers That Be, what hope is there that the American people – who don't believe anything if they don't see it on television – will awaken to the danger in time? Again, in my more pessimistic moments, there doesn't seem to be any such hope: television news seems firmly in the camp of the War Party, and the "mainstream" print media also doesn't seem a likely venue for this kind of reporting.

On my more optimistic days, however, I almost believe it's possible to outflank the War Party on the media front – because the Internet is a mighty weapon that will defeat them in the end. A recent Pew study shows that this is not just a technophilic fantasy:

"The Internet continues to grow as a source of news for Americans. One-in-four (24%) list the internet as a main source of news. Roughly the same number (23%) say they go online for news every day, up from 15% in 2000; the percentage checking the Web for news at least once a week has grown from 33% to 44% over the same time period.

"While online news consumption is highest among young people (those under age 30), it is not an activity that is limited to the very young. Three-in-ten Americans ages 30-49 cite the Internet as a main source of news.

"The importance of the Web for people in their working years is even more apparent when the frequency of use is taken into account. One-third of people in their 30s say they get news online every day, as do 27% of people in their 40s. Nearly a quarter of people in their 50s get news online daily, about the same rate as among people ages 18-29."

What this means is that we can put the news the MSM won't cover – e.g., the story about Cheney's Dr. Strangelove plan to strike Iran – on the front page of Antiwar.com and potentially reach one-in-four Americans. Last month we had over 2 million readers; this month is headed toward the same range – and that's in summertime, a traditionally slow time for us. Yet we're setting new records.

This, it seems to me, is the only reason for hope: a strategy of doing an end run around the mass media. We must mount a last desperate attempt to stand athwart the apocalypse shouting "No!" The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

Never for a minute did any of us who founded Antiwar.com imagine we would one day be front and center in a twilight struggle to protect the country and the world from such a monumental evil, and yet here we are, a band of hobbits up against all the dark powers of Mordor. Without getting any more melodramatic than is absolutely unavoidable, I can only note that we've come a long way on our quest to rid the world of this particular Ring of Power, and the battle seems to be reaching some sort of dramatic climax. As to whether or not the Cheney-neocon-War Party axis of evil will be defeated in the end, no one can confidently predict at the moment. Yet one thing does seem clear: as long as Antiwar.com is around, we have at least a fighting chance.

I want to thank each and every one of our readers who have supported us down through the years, even as I remind them that their future support is even more vitally important than ever before. Together we can beat the War Party – but not without constant vigilance. We stand on the watchtower just as long as you, our readers and supporters, keep us there. BLITZER: Thank you. As Wolf just mentioned, Senator Hillary Clinton tonight, voicing her opposition to tough border security legislation that's now under debate on Capitol Hill.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Roger Mahoney of Los Angeles, the leader of the largest Catholic diocese in this country, says worshipers should break the law, if necessary, to help illegal aliens in this tough -- if this tough border legislation is passed.

Joining me now to talk about God and politics, the Catholic Church and illegal immigration is Father Richard Neuhaus. He's founder the Institute for Religion and Public Life, and Father, it's good to have you here.

FATHER RICHARD NEUHAUS, INST. FOR RELIGION & PUBLIC LIFE: Good to be with you, Lou. DOBBS: The idea that the Catholic Church would, through in the person of the Bishop's Conference and Cardinal Mahoney, inject itself so vigorously and really call for basically civil disobedience is remarkable.

NEUHAUS: Well, the New York Times editorial page lauded him for his courage for introducing important moral considerations into this public policy issue.

DOBBS: What are the moral considerations if one names a specific piece of legislation, as the cardinal did. And calls for, first the rejection of the legislation, specifically, and calls for disobedience?

NEUHAUS: Yes. I think the language of civil disobedience was unfortunate. But you have to make a clear distinction between pastoral care on the one hand, which is the substantive issue that the cardinal was pushing, and on which he's right. The church cannot become a instrument of the law enforcement of the criminal justice system.

DOBBS: Should government become an instrument of the church?

NEUHAUS: No, no. The pastoral care is one thing, public policy is another thing. Now on pastoral care, the church's religious freedom is inviolable.

That means you serve everybody and you don't ask whether they're legal or illegal or whatever else the problems may be, you respond to the problems that are presented to you, because you simply are the church. Public policy, you're right. You get into a dicey area. But it's not simply limited to the Catholic Church and certainly not to this immigration policy.

DOBBS: No it's not.

NEUHAUS: It's whenever religious leaders use their authority in a way that seems to be suggesting that those who disagree with a particular position are somehow out of sync with the teachings of church. Then you begin to get problems, unless your really dealing with something like abortion, euthanasia, where you do have solid teaching of the church. But on immigration policy, obviously people of equal intelligence and goodwill can very strongly disagree, and do.

DOBBS: Vigorously. That's where we are right now in this time.

NEUHAUS: Of course.

DOBBS: But also we're talking about an issue that is broader even than illegal immigration. That is, the relationship between religion and government, God and politics. And frankly we're at a time, I will tell you, Father, I'm a very nervous American.

I believe in a separation of church and state. Millions of other Americans do, and The Constitution that seems to get in the way of a lot of people in this country insists upon it. And it is a two-way relationship. And it becomes very difficult to see how we can defend that separation if we permit an intrusion on the part the church into public policy.

Because we're watching -- not only Catholics, I want to be clear. We have evangelicals who are apparently influencing this administration strongly, reaching to the hearts, minds, and souls of some of our Congressional people as well.

NEUHAUS: But Lou, the separation of Church and state never meant, and cannot mean and never will mean the separation of religion from politics. Religion is basically those deepest commanding truths, those moral principles. It's not all that religion is, but it is certainly that, which you bring to bear in making political judgments and arguments. So the alternative is, and this is the argument of --

DOBBS: I have no problem.

NEUHAUS: The alternative is the naked public square. The alternative is a political process in which you say to certain people, because their deepest convictions are religiously grounded, you say oh you cannot bring your deep moral convictions into the debate.

DOBBS: I would want anyone to bring who they are into the debate.

NEUHAUS: Exactly.

DOBBS: Whether it be their religion, their spiritual beliefs.

NEUHAUS: Their political philosophy. Their, whatever, sure.

DOBBS: But when we take a personal system of religious beliefs and it becomes the foundation of public policy, it seems to me, when we're excited about whether a James Dobson likes a Supreme Court candidate or doesn't, whether the Catholic Church wants to bring 20 million additional adherents into its American church, while tolerating poverty in Mexico and Central America, then maybe we should all be discussing how the Catholic Church is conducting itself in social and governmental and political issues.

NEUHAUS: Let's not discuss it in terms of church state separation. Whether it be Jim Dobson or whether it be Cardinal Mahoney. The discussion is not --

DOBBS: I'll defer to you.

NEUHAUS: The discussion is not about church state separation. The discussion is an honest disagreement in which religious leaders, as much as everybody else, as citizens, participate in the deliberation and decision-making process in the public square. So the fact is, that you disagree.

DOBBS: No, I don't disagree. I'm out of time. I do disagree as well, but I'm more out of time than disagreeing. I hope you will come back soon and we'll continue the discussion.

NEUHAUS: Always a pleasure.

Thousands of people converged on the Capitol on Tuesday, March 7, to demand that Congress throw out the cruel Sensenbrenner/King bill (H.R. 4437), and adopt a comprehensive, humane, immigration policy. The Sensenbrenner/King bill would make all undocumented immigrants "aggravated felons", would build more jails for immigrants, and would make anyone who "aided" an undocumented immigrant or transported her or him within the U.S. an "alien smuggler". This could include driving someone to the doctor, or driving a coworker home...

Thus, one quickly has to assume that the buildings were designed to NOT collapse from 'normal' fire temperatures and return to the question of the reality behind not only a collapse, but an abrupt collapse.

Look to the compelling photos below. (Also used in the FEMA report.) In the center of the impact hole (look very closely) there is a blonde standing there, leaning to the right. Thus, one must contemplate just how cool the pre-collapse temperatures were, at the impact - and presumably the hottest - point. The second picture shows her standing fully upright, attesting to the authenticity of the photo image, versus a photographic aberration.

The woman would have to come from the stairway, in the center of the building. Her white pants indicate that it wasn't a very messy area. Just how much damage could have possibly been done, at the most vulnerable point, given her obvious origins?

When one wishes to argue "controlled demolition," then it is necessary to address the topic of 'explosives.' The WTC collapses do not yet leave an overwhelming documented audio legacy suggesting explosives. Note the use of the term "overwhelming." There are arguments claiming that explosions did occur. If so, they were incredibly controlled; that's to leave the issue as being 'possible.' Where one would anticipate such explosions as factual, it is reasonable to expect at least a radio report of explosions, among the last transmissions of the firefighters who were trapped in the buildings.

Increasingly, those reports ARE coming forward!

Initially, those communications got quite a "security" lid clamped upon them, as well. So, one must also ask what is true, in that picture. Why is the truth so frightening?

In any event, a simple stopwatch screams "controlled demolition!

Despite a 2000 request for "pardon," widely interpreted as an apology to Muslims for the Crusades, by the late Pope John Paul II, the Vatican reopened the debate last week with a conference that characterized the wars fought centuries ago as defensive measures taken with the noble aim of regaining the Holy Land for Christianity, according to the London Times.

The conference, held at the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University, brought together scholars from around the world who were anything but apologetic for the series of wars fought by European Christendom over 750 years ago.

Italian historian Roberto De Mattei told the attendees the Crusades were "a response to the Muslim invasion of Christian lands and the Muslim devastation of the holy places," noting the destruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem by Muslim forces in 1009 that preceded the First Crusade called by Pope Urban II in 1095.

Crusaders, argued De Mattei, were "martyrs" who had "sacrificed their lives for the faith."


Robert Spencer, the American author of "A Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam," disputed the dominant notion the Crusades were "an unprovoked attack by Europe on the Islamic world."

"Pope Urban II, who called for the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont in 1095, was calling for a defensive action – one that was long overdue," Spencer told an interviewer with Catholic Online prior to the conference. "As he explained, he was calling the Crusade because without any defensive action, 'the faithful of God will be much more widely attacked' by the Turks and other Muslim forces.

"'For, as most of you have heard, the Turks and Arabs have attacked them and have conquered the territory of Romania [the Greek empire] as far west as the shore of the Mediterranean and the Hellespont, which is called the Arm of St. George,' Pope Urban II said in his address. 'They have occupied more and more of the lands of those Christians, and have overcome them in seven battles. They have killed and captured many, and have destroyed the churches and devastated the empire. If you permit them to continue thus for a while with impunity, the faithful of God will be much more widely attacked by them.'

"He was right. Jihad warfare had from the seventh century to the time of Pope Urban conquered and Islamized what had been over half of Christendom. There had been no response from the Christian world until the Crusades."

According to Spencer, the beginning of centuries of Muslim aggression can be traced to A.D. 638 when the Muslims conquered Jerusalem. Thereafter, Christians were subjected to demands for money, crucifixions, massacres, destruction of churches, denial of the right to teach their own children and forced conversions.

There were Crusader atrocities, agreed Spencer, pointing to the sacking of Jerusalem in 1099, but, he argued, it was not extraordinary.

"The Crusaders' sack of Jerusalem was a heinous crime – particularly in light of the religious and moral principles they professed to uphold," said Spencer. "However, by the military standards of the day, it was not actually anything out of the ordinary. In those days, it was a generally accepted principle of warfare that if a city under siege resisted capture, it could be sacked, and while if it did not resist, mercy would be shown. It is a matter of record that Muslim armies frequently behaved in exactly the same way when entering a conquered city.

"This is not to excuse the Crusaders' conduct by pointing to similar actions. One atrocity does not excuse another. But it does illustrate that the Crusaders' behavior in Jerusalem was consistent with that of other armies of the period – since all states subscribed to the same notions of siege and resistance."

While the capture of Jerusalem is often portrayed as the beginning of Muslims' mistrust of the West, Spencer said it would be more accurate to see it as the "start of a millennium of anti-Western grievance mongering and propaganda."

The enduring grievance, real or imagined, is seen in Osama bin Laden's claim to be leading a latter-day "jihad against the Jews and Crusaders." In the past, the al-Qaida leader has referred to his organization as the "World Islamic Front for Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders," and has called in a fatwa for "jihad against Jews and Crusaders."



Jonathan Riley-Smith, Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Cambridge University, took issue with the portrayal of the Crusaders in the recent film, "Kingdom of Heaven," calling it "utter nonsense" and accusing director Sir Ridley Scott of fueling Islamic fundamentalism by propagating "Osama bin Laden's version of history."

The script, he said, was "historically inaccurate. It depicts the Muslims as civilized and the Crusaders as barbarians. It has nothing to do with reality."

While agreeing the Crusaders were sometimes undisciplined and committed acts of cruelty, it was true of the Muslims and troops, even now, in "all ideological wars." The worst excesses of the Crusaders, Riley-Smith said, were generally reserved for the Orthodox and heretics. Those who seek forgiveness for the Crusades, he said, "do not know their history."

"Westerners should not be embarrassed by the Crusades," Spencer concluded. "It's time to say, 'enough,' and teach our children to take pride in their own heritage. They should know that they have a culture and a history of which they can and should be grateful; that they are not the children and grandchildren of oppressors and villains; and that their homes and families are worth defending against those who want to take them away, and are willing to kill to do so."

March 25, 2006 -- The Pentagon's role as a source of media disinformation. First it was the Office of Northern Gulf Affairs, which morphed into the Office of Special Plans. Both served as conduits for neo-con propaganda spewed forth by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), Heritage Foundation, Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), the Hudson Institute, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), among others prior to the invasion of Iraq.

Now the Pentagon has issued an "unclassified report" stating that in the lead up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Russia obtained war plans and planned U.S. troop movements from “inside the American Central Command.” The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) denied the charge, stating that "similar, baseless accusations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once."

The Pentagon cited as its source two captured Iraqi documents that describe Russian penetration of the US Central Command in Qatar. However, the Pentagon's story later changed. The revised story stated the Russian obtained the war plans from signals intelligence intercepts of pre-war U.S. military communications. In either case, the citing of "captured" Iraqi documents has been used in the past to falsely implicate various anti-war international politicians with being in league with Saddam's "Oil for Food" program. Many of these "captured" documents were forgeries emanating from notorious Iraqi con man Ahmad Chalabi. Bogus Niger government documents were forged by a neo-con cabal based in Rome, Washington, and Jerusalem to justify an attack on Iraq based on non-existent weapons of mass destruction. The information contained in the two "secret" Iraqi documents could have been obtained from any number of open sources, including Jane's Defence Weekly. The "sic" appearing next to "special forces unit 'Papa'" in the purported Iraqi documents is a clue to a forgery. The standard NATO/DoD phonetic code for the letter "P" is "Papa." Why the authors would indicate a possible misspelling of Papa in the document is curious unless its because the real authors include some of our most noted neo-con draft dodgers who are unfamiliar with U.S. and NATO military nomenclatures. The two secret Iraqi documents are handwritten and contain no official government seal or stamps, another clear indication of a forgery.



Putin and Russian government: Latest targets of the neo-cons and likely forged documents

The neo-con stranglehold on the Pentagon continues to permit this cabal of provocateurs and dual loyalists to pump out false charges in an attempt to damage relations with Russia and President Vladimir Putin as Russia continues to push for negotiations with Iran and lay the possible groundwork for Russian casualties at Iranian nuclear facilities in the event of war with Iran. Neo-cons would argue that such casualties were legitimate considering previous Russian support for Saddam against the United States.

In fact, the Pentagon neo-cons now have more power than ever considering the current presence of anti-Russian neo-con-influenced governments in Poland, Ukraine, and Georgia. Polish Defense Minister Radek Sikorski, an AEI alum and colleague of Richard Perle and Michael Ledeen, is married to the Washington Post's Anne Applebaum. All four are virulently anti-Putin, especially since Putin began cracking down on the Russian oligarchs who looted the USSR's treasury and resources and made themselves instant billionaires, at the expense of the peoples of the former Soviet Union.

Over 70 percent of Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs carry Israeli passports. Ukraine President Viktor Yuschenko's wife, Kateryna Chumachenko Yushchenko, is an American citizen and held positions in the Reagan White House that were directed against "the evil empire." She was, and remains, close to the leading neo-con war hawks of the Reagan years, including Perle, Ledeen, Douglas Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, and Ken Adelman. Georgia's President, Mikhail Saakashvili, in an anti-Putin U.S.-trained lawyer who ousted his predecessor in a U.S.-financed and supported coup backed by oil companies like Halliburton and Exxon Mobil. In addition to the offices of AEI, AIPAC, Hudson, WINEP, and Heritage, in addition to the Pentagon, the embassies of Poland, Ukraine, and Georgia in Washington have become virtual neo-con nesting places, working overtime to formulate all sorts of anti-Russian propaganda aimed at destabilizing Russia and toppling Putin. They are assisted in these efforts by the US Mission to the United Nations, which under arch neo-con John Bolton, has become a favorite off-site meeting place for Washington-based neo-cons right in the middle of Manhattan.

First: The Russian ambassador informed us on the evening of March 24, 2003 of the following:

Point 1: In relation to the position paper that we delivered to them on March 23, 2003 (the subject of our report 459 dated March 23, 2003), he noted that the Russian foreign minister is in agreement. The time has come to raise the subject of American aggression against Iraq in the [UN] Security Council. For this reason, he has directed the Russian envoy to the UN to meet with his counterparts from China, France, Syria, and Germany to discuss elements of the Iraqi position paper and to prepare a draft resolution to present to the [Security] Council. The Russian foreign minister feels that the resolution's chances of success in the Security Council are nil because the Anglo-Saxons have a veto. But Russia considers talks in the Security Council important to convey that the American-British military effort consists of aggression and the unilateral use of force in violation of international law, the UN Charter, and Security Council resolutions. If the Security Council fails to adopt the resolution, the matter will be transferred to the UN General Assembly. The Russian foreign minister proposes that Iraq coordinate with Arab countries and the non-aligned movement to demand the holding of a session of the Council.

Point 2: As concerns the proposals by Kofi Annan to introduce changes to the Oil for Food program, the Russian foreign minister has directed Russia's permanent representative to the UN to freeze any discussion of Kofi Annan's proposals. There will be a meeting in Paris on March 27 at the level of departments within the foreign ministries of Russia, France, China, and Germany, to agree on proposals about the program that these countries will present.

Point 3: Information Russia has obtained from its sources in the U.S. Central Command in Doha [Qatar] indicates that the Americans have concluded that the occupation of Iraqi cities is impossible. They have changed their approach and now intend to spread out along the Euphrates River from Al-Basrah in the south to Al-Qa'im in the north, avoiding entering cities. The goal is to cut Iraq off from its Western border. The Americans also plan to occupy oil wells in Kirkuk.

Point 4: Information received indicates that Jordan has agreed to accept the American 4th Mechanized [Infantry] Division. It had been decided that this division would enter Turkey, but after the Turkish parliament's refusal to permit it entry, it changed direction and it is crossing the Suez Canal at present and is expected to arrive in Aqaba.

Point 5: The Russian ambassador noted that two days ago he gave us [information] on American special forces units Delta and Papa [sic] based on information from Russian intelligence (the subject of our report 446 dated March 20, 2003). He did not have instructions to convey to us the above-mentioned information. Yesterday, Iraqi intelligence officers contacted their counterparts at the Russian embassy and inquired about the matter, noting that the Russian ambassador in Baghdad was the one who gave them this information. This caused him embarrassment. He would like us not to mention in discussions with other Russian agencies the source of the information that he is giving us.

Second: Pursuant to the resolution of the Arab Foreign Ministers' Conference dated March 24, 2003, the Arab group in the UN held a meeting on the evening of March 24, 2003 and decided to send a letter to the chairman of the Security Council demanding an immediate emergency session of the Security Council [to ensure] a halt to the American-British aggression against Iraq; the immediate withdrawal of hostile forces beyond the borders of the Republic of Iraq; respect for Iraq's sovereignty, political independence, and territorial unity; and a ban on [other] countries' interference in its internal affairs. Kuwait objected to sending the letter.

The Arab group also discussed the issue of presenting a draft resolution to the Security Council and considered it appropriate to consult with the non-aligned movement to present a draft resolution that has the support of at least nine members of the Council so that it does not have a negative effect and so the Americans cannot use it to lend legitimacy to the aggression if the draft resolution fails in the Council without a veto.

Elsewhere, our permanent representative to the UN met with the Malaysian representative. It was agreed that Malaysia, acting in the name of the non-aligned movement, will present a demand for an emergency session of the Security Council on the American aggression against Iraq.

Our warmest greetings!

We would like to inform you that the Russian ambassador met this evening with the general director for external economic relations and the general director for grain trade and he informed us of the following:

1. The provision of facilities for the departure of Russian specialists working on projects belonging to our ministry without delay for the period March 5-8, with the last plane departing on March 9, as he conveyed. He explained that the request for the evacuation of Russian citizens came at the order of the Russian president.

2. He explained that Russia has been working with France and Germany, and it is expected that they will be joined by Syria and China, to prepare a draft Security Council resolution in response to the U.S.-British resolution that has been presented to the [UN] Security Council. Voting will take place on the two resolutions on March 9. He indicated that it is expected that a number of countries on the Security Council will abstain, including Pakistan, Chile, and Kenya.

3. During this meeting the ambassador presented the following information about the American military presence in the Gulf and the region as of March 2:

- Number of forces: 206,500, including 98,000 marines and 36,500 infantry. Ninety percent of these forces are in Kuwait and on American military vessels.
- American forces have also reached Bubiyan Island
- Number of tanks: 480
- Number of armored vehicles: 1,132
- Number of artillery pieces: 296
- Helicopters (Apache): 735
- Fighter planes: 871
- Units of the American fleet: 106, including 68 in the Gulf and the remainder in Oman, Aden, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean
- Number of aircraft carriers: 5, including one nuclear-powered [carrier]; three of them are in the Gulf, one in the Mediterranean, and the other in [unclear, ed.]
- Number of cruise missiles: 583, belonging to the American navy, distributed among 22 naval vessels
- Number of aircraft-borne cruise missiles: 64
- Number of heavy planes (B-52H) in the Indian Ocean: 10
- Number of B-1B at the American base in Oman (Thumrait): 8

4. The ambassador indicated that what concerns us is the increase in the number of planes in Jordan. He explained that the number of these planes at Al-Salt base is now as follows:

- 24 F-16s
- 10 Tornadoes - 11 Carriers [F-18s]

He also indicated that there are five A-10 tank killers at the King Faisal base in Jordan.

5. The ambassador also indicated that a number of individuals from the 82nd [Airborne] Division have begun arriving Kuwait. This division was located in Afghanistan, and the number of individuals who have arrived is 750.

March 24, 2006 -- Sponsor of terrorism: the United States. Imagine a group of five CIA officers dispatched to a foreign country to investigate and report on an Al Qaeda cell planning a series of major bombings in the United States, including hotel and shopping mall bombings. Then, imagine the outcry if the five CIA agents were arrested by the nation where they were assigned and hit with trumped up charges, found guilty before a kangaroo court, and sentenced to life terms in prison for espionage. The United States would demand revenge and likely take military action against the host country. The harboring of terrorists was the justification used by the Bush administration to attack Afghanistan.

The above scenario is exactly what occurred to five Cuban intelligence agents dispatched to Miami to report on the activities of Cuban exiled terrorists who were planning a series of terrorist bombings against foreign tourists and Cuban civilians in Cuba during the 1990s. In September 1998, five Cubans -- Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo, Ramon Labanino Salazar, Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, Fernando Gonzalez Llort, and Rene Gonzalez -- were arrested in Miami, and after the longest federal trial in U.S. history, were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage by a jury that was tampered with by the Department of Justice and FBI. They have been put in solitary confinement and some have not been allowed to see their wives and mothers because the Bush administration is denying them visas to travel to the U.S. Furthermore, the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, DC has been restricted to a 12-mile radius within the nation's capital -- they are not permitted to speak at symposia on behalf of their jailed agents beyond Washington. However, yesterday, this editor attended a symposium at George Washington University Law School in DC on the plight of the "Cuban Five."

After the federal trial judge in Miami rejected the defense request for a change of venue to Fort Lauderdale from Miami because of the nature of Miami's rabid, right-wing Cuban exile community, the defense appealed the decision to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which, on August 9, 2005, issued a 93-page opinion on the venue issue. Unanimously, a three judge panel ruled that the Cuban Five did not receive a fair trial in Miami. This was the first time a court reversed a decision based on venue. Immediately, the Bush Justice Department ordered an appeal of the decision to an en banc panel of the 11th Circuit (12 of the 13 judges on the court, one judge recused himself).

According to Leonard Weinglass, the attorney for Guerrero, "Miami is home to over 600,000 exiles that harbor a 'state of war' mentality against the Cuban government. Even the U.S. government, in a pretrial motion in another case one year later, argued to the Court that it was 'virtually impossible' for a fair trial to be held in Miami in a case that touched upon Cuban issues."

Weinglass added, "for forty years this country has hosted a network of terrorism in Florida directed at Cuba; it has recruited them, trained them and armed them, and when Cuba repeatedly asked if the United States, the host country, to rein in these terrorists, they were met with inaction, and so Cuba sent a group of people here to monitor the activities of the terrorist network in Florida, and when they for too close, the FBI stepped in and arrested the Five, and prosecuted them before the exiled community in Miami, and they were sentenced to life terms in prison."

In fact, many individuals close to this case report that southern Florida is a virtual independent right-wing republic acting with its own foreign policy, a foreign policy that is pampered and supported by southern Florida's Cuban GOP congressional delegation, particularly Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

Weinglass said, "this case is more easily understood if you think of the case of Orlando Bosch, a member of that terrorist network, who planted a bomb on a Cubana airline in 1976, which exploded in midair, killing 73 people. Mr. Bosch applied for residence in the United States after that episode, and the Justice Department and the INS deemed him an undesirable person, pointed to 30 years of terrorist activity including the bombing, and asked that he be barred from entry in the United States. But Orlando Bosch had a friend in Florida, a young man who wanted to be governor: his name was Jeb Bush . . . He intervened with his father who was then the President of the United States, and George Bush Sr. overruled the Justice Department and the INS and granted Orlando Bosch's residence in the United States. He now walks as a free man in Miami, Florida. He walks as a free man, while the Five, who had no guns, no explosives, created no harm in the United States, did not involve themselves in any classified information here, did not interfere with national security, are serving life in maximum security prisons here in the United States. The next time the Bush administration moralizes about the war on terrorism, remember Orlando Bosch, and remember the Cuban Five."

It is also noteworthy that when Bosch and his CIA-trained team bombed the Cubana airliner off of Barbados on October 6, 1976, the director of the CIA was none other than George H. W. Bush. Bosch was assisted by Luis Posada Carriles, a Cuban-born and naturalized Venezuelan terrorist who has been protected by Governor Bush in Florida and George W. Bush in Washington. On May 22, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency ruled that Carriles would continued to be held in custody in El Paso after trying to illegally enter the country from Mexico and not be extradited to Venezuela for the terrorist bombing of the Cubana aircraft. The Venezuelan embassy in Washington reacted by stating, "We again call on the White House to honour its international treaty obligations and either extradite or prosecute Luis Posada Carriles for 73 counts of first degree murder." Recently declassified U.S. government documents show that Posada worked for the CIA at least from 1965 to 1976. Official investigations by the governments of Cuba, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana (several Guyanese perished in the bombing) concluded that the Cubana plane was downed in a terrorist attack. The United States never investigated the incident.

A Barbados official investigation found that their Trinidadian colleagues had discovered links between a Venezuelan in Trinidad involved in the bombing and the CIA. Chapter VIII of the report states: "one of the Venezuelans -- Mr. Lozano -- told the Trinidad and Tobago police chief that he was a member of the US Central Intelligence Agency, that his boss was a man who lived in Caracas and whose name was Luis Posada Carriles; that he had been three times to the US embassy in Barbados during the few hours that they [he and his Venezuelan bombing colleagues] were in that country after the plane blew up, hours they needed to do two things: go to the US embassy, and stop off at the hotel [Holiday Inn] to call a Caracas telephone number belonging to Luis Posada Carriles and another number belonging to Orlando Bosch Avila."



U.S. terrorism, directed by George H. W. Bush when he was CIA director, brought down a civilian jet liner off of Barbados. That makes Bush and his son, who continues to protect the bombers, no better than Osama Bin Laden -- or does it place them in the very same agent provocateur camp?

This editor arrived for Navy duty in Barbados less than a year after the Cuban exiles bombed the Cubana plane. The government of Barbados called for help from the US Naval Facility to assist in rescue operations. Rescue operations soon became an operation to recover bodies, including those of women and children. US Navy personnel who were scuba divers, as well as Navy corpsmen, assisted in the recovery operations. They were traumatized by what they saw but even more troubling was the what they later discovered -- the their own government aided and abetted in the terrorism. It was something my Barbadian friends often mentioned -- how could the U.S. assist in a terrorism operation in a friendly country like Barbados? I also became aware of the activities of Gerald Bull's Space Research Corporation near Grantley Adams International Airport. My Bajan friends in the government told me that it was a CIA operation to shoot rockets into the ionosphere for purposes of weather modification -- the ultimate goal was the steerage of Caribbean hurricanes to hit Cuba. An Intel Corporation activity near the deep water careenage in Bridgetown turned out to be a CIA front operation aimed at derailing leftist political parties in nearby islands like Grenada, Dominica, and St. Lucia. The Barbadians were incensed at these activities. As a U.S. Naval Officer with a Top Secret and Crypto/NATO COSMIC security clearance, I had no answer for them at the time. But I do now.

I agree with Seymour Hersh's prediction that George W. Bush, after he leaves office, may be snatched, Pinochet-style, by foreign law enforcement officers and whisked away to stand trial for war crimes. But it should not stop with Dubya -- his father and brother Jeb should also be hauled off to stand trial before an international court of justice -- for aiding and abetting terrorism. Let's not forget Poppy Bush's involvement in the terrorism bombing off the coast of Barbados and the September 21, 1976 car bombing on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, DC that killed former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier and his American colleague Ronni Moffitt. Manuel Contreras, the Chilean intelligence head who planned the bombing, was being paid by George H. W. Bush as a CIA asset at the time of the car bombing.

The anti-terrorist Cuban Five team had uncovered plans by members of the Cuban exiled community in Florida, who were protected by Jeb Bush and his family, to launch terrorist attacks against civilian targets in Cuba. Poppy Bush provided three ex-US Air Force militarized Cessna aircraft to Jose Basulto, an ex-CIA veteran of the Bay of Pigs invasion who founded the group "Brothers to the Rescue," a coordinating activity for the terrorist attacks on Cuba.

On October 7, 1992, Cuban exiles from Florida launched an armed seaborne attack against the Varadero Meilia Hotel in Cuba. The terrorists were later arrested by the FBI but released on orders from the Poppy Bush White House. On January 7, 1993, Tony Bryant, the leader of the terrorist group "Commandos L," announced plans to bomb more hotels and other targets in Cuba and warned foreign tourists to "stay away from Cuba." On November 7, 1993, Humberto Perez, spokesperson for the terrorist group Alpha 66, said "we consider anyone staying in a Cuban hotel to be an enemy."

On March 11, 1994, Miami-based terrorists fired on the Guitart Cayo Coco Hotel in Cuba. In November 1994 Posada and five accomplices smuggled weapons into Cartagena de Indias in Colombia to assassinated President Fidel Castro during the 5th Ibero-American Summit. The Coast Guard during the 1990s intercepted a number of vessels with armed men heading from Florida to Cuba. The FBI released all of thdetained terrorists. On April 12, 1997, a bomb exploded in the Melia Cohiba Hotel in Havana. On July 12, 1997, bombs exploded in the Capri and Nacional hotels. The GOP-connected Cuban American National Foundation gave unconditional support to these terrorist bombings in Cuba. On October 4, 1997, bombs exploded in the Triton, Chateau Miramar, and Copacabana hotels. The latter explosion killed a young Italian tourist, Fabio di Celmo. The same day, a bomb exploded at the Bodeguita del Medio restaurant. On October 27, 1997, the US Coast Guard stopped a vessel west of Puerto Rico that was manned by well-armed mercenaries. It was on its way to Venezuela's Margarita island with the intention of assassinating Fidel Castro during the Nov. 7, 1997 Ibero-American Summit. The vessel was registered to a Florida company whose chairman is a member of the board of directors of the Cuban American National Foundation. The mercenaries confessed about their intention to assassinate a foreign head of state but were acquitted in December 1999 following a rigged trial.

On July 12 and 13, 1998, Posada told the New York Times that he organized the bombing campaign against Cuban hotels and restaurants and that the Cuban American National Foundation and its chairman Jorge Mas Canosa was in charge of providing the funding mechanisms for the attacks. On November 17, 2000, a group of terrorists headed by Posada were arrested in Panama for planning to assassinate Fidel Castro at the 10th Ibero-American Summit. On October 22, 2002, Miami's Nuevo Herald revealed ties between the Cuban terrorist group Comandos F-4 and former members of the Venezuelan National Guard and the April 2002 coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. F-4 trained Venezuelan and Cuban commandos involved in the coup in "open fields in Homestead." In January 2003, the Wall Street Journal reported that Rodolfo Frometa, chief of Comandos F-4, announced in Miami the creation a of Cuban-Venezuelan "civic-military alliance" to overthrow Presidents Chavez and Castro and that 50 mercenaries were receiving military training "in a polygon located in The Everglades." On March 29, 2003, Orlando Bosch called for a march in Miami to support George W. Bush's military attack on Iraq. On March 22, 2004, Florida GOP Rep. Lincoln Diaz Balart called for the assassination of Fidel Castro.

On June 16 and 17, 1998, Cuba received an FBI delegation and turned over to them documents and other evidence pointing to the involvement of 40 terrorists in the United States in bombings and other attacks. The FBI took the information but obviously used it to determine that Cuba had obtained it from their agents in the United States -- three months later the Cuban Five were arrested in Miami. The Cuban-American terrorists were allowed to continue their terrorist activities against Cuban civilian targets.

Now we have this information from La Paz, Bolivia, where leftist Evo Morales recently took over as President. An American named Claudio Lestad, a.k.a. Triston Jay Arnero, formerly of New Orleans, Washington state, and Placerville, California and his Uruguayan girlfriend were arrested for bombing two La Paza hotels, killing two Bolivian couple who were doctors and injuring at least seven other people. California authorities say that Arnero has a troubled past as a youth and was in and out of juvenile correctional facilities. Court records indicate that upon release from juvenile detention, Arnero wanted to move abroad to work at an oil refinery. Lestad also uses several aliases, including Lestat Claudius de Orleans y Montevideo.

An Israeli citizen caught in Trinidad last year and investigated for detonating bombs in Port of Spain also used various aliases. The FBI investigated that incident but pressured Trinidad to release the man and he flew back to Israel. President Morales said, "This American was putting bombs in hotels . . . the U.S. government fights terrorism, and they send us terrorists." Bolivian authorities said the two were planning a bombing attack at a third hotel when they were caught and had been responsible for other hotel bombings around the country that did not cause any injuries. Bolivian police also said that Arnero was also planning to bomb the Chilean consulate in La Paz. The US Embassy in La Paz responded, "We're concerned about remarks made by the president and we have expressed those concerns to the Bolivian government." The embassy said nothing about the involvement of an American in terrorist attacks. Morales called on the Bush administration to stop sending terrorists to Bolivia to "disrupt democracy."

Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca said the bombings were designed to halt and destabilize reforms that Evo Morales and his government are trying to introduce in the country.

Some right-wing news outlets in the United States began to spin the story that Arnero is a follower of the neo-cons' favorite bogeyman, Osama Bin Laden, a fairly amazing claim considering Arnero insists he is a Wiccan high priest. [Note: this is how we must wade through the neo-con/Bush propaganda purveyors, they are actually terrible spinmeisters and their lies, such as this about Arnero and Bin Laden, are extremely transparent]. One other issue of importance is that the Cuban Five story has been totally ignored by the US media. Cuba turned over the very same documents on terrorist activities in Florida that it gave to the FBI to The New York Times. The Times never published the documents or admitted it even had them.
