Boycott Seattle Indymedia

Boycott Seattle Indymedia

I'm including two different editorial policies for the Seattle Indymedia - one from Portland, which is highly respected, and one from St. Louis that just had to make this difficult choice.

If Indymedia really choses to serve the gneral public than why not do a poll and find out!

portland indymedia editorial policy
Anyone can post to portland indymedia's open publishing newswire. News articles and media you upload using the publish form will appear in a couple minutes on the righthand newswire on the frontpage. In the case of heavy site traffic or large media uploads, the time may be longer.

Articles posted to the site go straight to the newswire and are not passed through an editorial board or approval process. Once articles and media are on the site, they may be hidden according to the editorial policy. The content of posts is never edited though sometimes formatting is corrected (someone forgot to check html checkbox, or made html errors etc).

portland indymedia worker drones reserve the right to hide posts that:
advocate criminal activity indicating a specific time, place and/or manner
are duplicate posts (the most recent remaining on the newswire)
are obviously libelous or slanderous
interfere with the technical functionality of the website
are intended to disrupt the site
are empty posts (no content or gibberish)
are commercial advertisements
promote racism, homophobia, sexism, or other discrimination.
are obviously incorrect or misleading, including attempts to spread dis-information
are reposted from corporate media outlets
Other posts might be composted accordingly.

For an explanation of general guidelines for the creation of feature stories (center column) see the what are features? page.

Please contact the editorial listserve to call attention to newswire articles that should/could be featured or to comment about the editorial policy.

Articles that are hidden, whether duplicate, disruptive, advertisement etc., are collected on the compost page. The compost page is linked from the bottom of the newswire on the front page.

If you wish to comment on the ideas in a particular post, use the "add a comment on this article" link at the bottom of that article. The free-wheeling discussions that take place through such comments are another interactive feature of the indymedia website.

Stories contributed to this site are free for non-profit re-use. Copyleft is a central tenet of indymedia. For more information, check out www.opencontent.org. If you don't want your story to fall under copyleft, please give your copyright conditions in the summary on the publish page.

general site guidelines:
please post news items only; post your comments after existing articles.
please post just one copy of your story. it may take a while for media to show up, so please be patient.
if you want to post multiple stories from other sites, please summarize and link them in one article rather than posting many articles one after the other which push other articles off the front page.
For more information on posting, see how-to publish

More details...

We have recently adopted a new policy that we will be testing in the next several weeks. The new policy is not yet set in stone, but we feel it will be successful to adequately shape the newswire into a more desirable medium for the site's purposes. We enthusiastically welcome comments and responses to the revised posting policy. Also check out the poll on left-hand column of main page!

Revision of this Policy

Introduction

Indymedia started in 1999 as an organizing tool for groups involved in the anti-globalization protests that found Seattle to be a battleground to expose the World Trade Organization. Protest groups were experienced enough to know that no matter what happened, the corporate media would sensationalize and limit focus to provide a very narrow and unrepresentative view of what was occurring. The reasons for the protest and any substantial analysis or criticism of the WTO would be neglected. The IMC created the open publishing Newswire so that people could exchange information quickly from anywhere in the city, and so that people across the world could immediately hear personal accounts of what was happening. The St. Louis IMC was born from the October 8th Coalition, which organized large protests to the presidential “debates” at Washington University in 2000.

The open publishing concept seemed radical and new. Dialogues could occur in this new type of public forum. Anonymity was key, because police harassment was sure to seek a way to break this mode of communication between revolutionary activists. The IMC also wanted to make sure that when they got subpoenaed, no information about individuals would be available for the courts to use.

The IMC movement is intended to highlight the stories and actions of underrepresented groups resisting oppression, and it seeks to expose the spin and hype that mainstream media puts on information. By giving everyone the tools to publish their own stories, the movement is a challenge to the ownership by a few people and corporations of “the news,” an institution that shapes so many peoples' daily conversations and perceptions of the world.

Sadly, people opposed to this happily exploited this empowerment to do the opposite. Instead of seeking dialogue, they sought dominance. Instead of seeking solutions to fostering coexistence, diversity and communication, disruptors used hate speech and cynicism to make open discussion impossible on the Newswire. Police and government agencies published their own COINTELPRO-type slander and misinformation that discredited the forum.

For a long time, this was tolerated as the price one paid for free speech. We encouraged rebuttals to point out the racism and sexism (among other ‘ism’s), and we felt there was some value to hate speech being visible, along with deconstructions of it. Let there be debates!

Nevertheless, we have recently adopted a new policy that we will be testing in the next several weeks. The new policy is not yet set in stone, but we feel it will be successful in adequately shaping the Newswire into a more desirable medium for this site's purposes. While this decision has been hard to come to, we feel it will best resolve a recurring dilemma. Many people were alienated by some of the extremely offensive content present on the Newswire, and instead of acting as a safe space for the oppressed and minorities, the Newswire became quite the opposite. Numerous people with no interest in social justice and equality used the Newswire in a way contrary to our mission. In response, instead of letting the loudest voice, the most persistent poster, and the most offensive asshole dominate the Newswire, we will now be moderating some of the destructive material off. There are no easy or perfect solutions to moderating an open Newswire, rich with a healthy democracy of views.

Publishing policy

We have agreed on the following guidelines to help us decide what postings are appropriate and what are not. We believe that these guidelines will help to make the moderating process a clearer one for IMC volunteers, and for anyone who self-publishes. We also believe these guidelines will maintain an unencumbered, useful and open Newswire for readers worldwide.

We especially encourage individuals to publish:

Well researched, timely articles
Eyewitness accounts of progressive actions and demonstrations
Coverage of St. Louis metro area issues
Media analysis
Investigative reports exposing injustice
Stories on events affecting underrepresented groups
Media produced from within underrepresented groups
Local stories with national or global significance
Stories on people or projects working towards social and economic justice
Original, underreported stories of local, regional, national, or global importance.
Analysis and constructive critique of features and comments

When May A Post Be Hidden?

An “open publishing” system is founded, fundamentally, on trust. The editors of and participants in this project trust that other participants will use the Newswire to publish news, or, at the least, intelligent and insightful commentary. However, as StL IMC's popularity has grown, so has the abuse of our open publishing system. Some of the abuse seems to be juvenile in nature; some amounts to a deliberate attempt to destroy the project. Sadly, our own determination to keep online everything posted to the Newswire, no matter how offensive, ended up doing little to protect the Newswire's integrity.

The StL IMC editorial collective, in order to maintain the integrity of the Newswire and the media commons it creates for our community of participants, may "hide" posts to the Newswire when the content disregards the guidelines that have been put in place (see below).

We'd like to remind everyone that hidden articles are not deleted from the site. All content posted to the Newswire can be accessed through the administrative interface, and hidden posts are still kept online.

While we try to avoid hiding posts as much as possible, the following types of items will merit close scrutiny and may be hidden at our discretion:

Posts which are obviously incorrect or misleading, . This includes attempts to spread dis-information or to impersonate another individual.
Posts that contain generalized and negative assertions about any race, nation, creed, class, ethnic group, sexual orientation, etc.
Posts that advocate the mass physical elimination of a specific race, nation, creed, class, ethnic group, sexual orientation, etc, or that promotes websites that advocate the same.
Posts that treat the Newswire as a personal "bulletin board" with non-political content directed at one or another Newswire participants.
Unreadable formats (i.e. photos posted as text).
Duplicate posts (including duplicate images and other media).
Advertising of products or for-profit services.
Pornography, excepting sexually explicit satire.

On top of these criteria, we also reserve the option to delete posts if their continued presence directly impedes our ability to keep the Newswire online as a public and open forum. To preserve transparency in these editorial decisions, a list of deleted posts (minus the content) is available here.

Within the above guidelines, we welcome posts that disagree with the opinions held by the editors of this website. We also encourage visitors to the StL IMC to use the Newswire's rating function to express agreement or disagreement with specific posts.

Revision of this Policy

Every six months, the StL IMC collective will review this policy, as well as a sampling of posts hidden during the previous six months. We would also like to emphasize that if any collective member disagrees with the hiding of any post, he or she may contact the editorial listserve or request to discuss the matter at an IMC Meeting.

Drop us a line and let us know what you think, or if there is something that we’ve missed:.

a change is needed

The adoption of either of these sets of rules would represent a major step forward here at Seattle IMC.

The only thing I'd take issue with (at first glance) is Portland IMC not allowing mainstream media reposts. I think such reposts can be valuable if they're accompanied with commentary about why a particular article is worth reading. We certainly don't want to isolate ourselves from the bourgeois mouthpieces.

I hope the Seattle IMC editorial staff acts soon. And I also think a poll could be useful in this instance.

Lastly, if the Seattle IMC editorial staff needs some help--please put forward an agenda and I am sure that some people will step forward to help. Also consider a meeting venue that is more easily accessible by most people likely to attend. The Capitol Hill Public Library, for instance...

corporate media
Posted by: pdxindy geek at Feb 28, 2006 00:39

Ha! If only we could isolate ourselves from corporate media! Not a chance of that. It is like the water we swim in. It is nigh impossible to avoid.

I was involved in the Portland decision and I wanted to clarify the approach. If someone writes a piece critiquing a corporate media article, or writes a paragraph or two about what they like about it, it is not composted. This policy is for straight reposts. It is not a lot to ask of someone to write something, especially tying the article to local issues, organizing etc. rather than just endless reposts of corporate media.

There is almost no space where that garbage isn't. We consider it important to create space at least mostly free of it so other ideas can be heard and not have to compete with a bunch of insidious propaganda.

Same reasons also for not allowing a bunch of racist sexist bigots to poison the well we are trying to drink from. Only thing is, the corporate media is by far the more dangerous of the two.

Regardless of this particular point, the Portland site was drowing in garbage posts until it was decided to start moving it to the compost page. Many readers were leaving, people saw no point to post an article they had written if it was going to receive a bunch of crude, thoughtless, or malicious comments. Taking that decision the site immediately became more healthy and started attracting better quality content.

I heartily recommend Seattle take a similar step, whatever the specifics of the policies might be.

nazis must have no right to speak on imc
Posted by: Ben Seattle at Feb 28, 2006 01:11

There is _no_ good reason to allow nazis to make use of Seattle IMC to promote their racist filth.

Doing so helps the nazis and also severely degrades the usefulness of Seattle Indymedia as a news source and forum for the progressive community.

Why should anyone whose time is valuable spend that valuable time in building a site which gives a free hand to nazis?

Why bother attempting to build a discussion thread that will be hijacked by racist pigs?

This is total bullshit.

Whatever is necessary to stop this bullshit needs to be done.

Seattle IMC's _liberal_ policy toward the nazis is degrading itself and fails to respect the progressive community by allowing this to continue.

I believe that a statement from _each_ individual member of the Seattle IMC editorial board is necessary.

And I believe that this post should receive center column treatment. IMC's failure to censor nazi posts has at this point itself become news of interest to the progressive community.

Agree
Posted by: Don Quixote at Feb 28, 2006 11:45

My God, I can't believe I'm agreeing with Edward (: and Ben Seattle. While I enjoy picking apart both of their respective posts because I don't think that they do good research, I agree that you do need to have some policy for not letting your site be co-opted by these neo-nazi wannabe's (and others). Hey, and if I get censored for my particular views, it wouldn't be the first time...

Ben - you should be careful what you wish for when you say "whatever is necessary". It may not be what you think.

Not that you all needed (or wanted) me to weigh in, but I agree, cut 'em out. It's your site, make it valuable to your core users.

"Portland, which is highly respected"

They apparently never even *heard* of fact checking. That's why, for example, they published this pack of lies:

 http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/01/277978.shtml

that was spammed around the net with Kevin Keating's name forged to it:

 http://sf.indymedia.org/news/2004/01/1671143_comment.php#1672316

Real journalists fact check first and publish second. Portland failed miserably by publishing this crap. It's bad journalism and worse politics. They didn't even have the common, human decency to ask anyone at SF-IMC if it was true. This is inexcusably bad politics. For shame, Portland-IMC, for shame.

Seattle did no better on this particular story:

 http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2004/01/237946.shtml

"Coverage" like that is a disgrace to journalism. No wonder most people think Indymedia is joke.

This crap doesn't help IMC's reputation, either:

 http://sf.indymedia.org/news/2006/02/1725115_comment.php#1725118

Racist propaganda has no place on *any* IMC. It doesn't matter if it's by Nazis, Zionists, Klansmen, Chetniks or the Interahamwe. A racist is a racist is a racist. Throw them *all* out. The same goes for the misogynists, the homophobes, the warmongers and the apologists for ecocide and exploitation. Throw them out.

Then there's the matter of disinfo spam.

For example, the infamous "SCIMC was Hi Jacked":

 http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2006/02/251605.shtml

or this wretched dreck, also with Kevin Keating's name forged to it:

 http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2005/05/245891.shtml

There is *no* excuse for crap like this appearing on IMC bandwidth. It is the work of our enemies.

See:

There is no point to Indymedia if what people read here can't be believed. IMCistas across the network need to clean up their acts and make IMC a threat again:

Portland isn't as transparent as you think
Posted by: Ktesibios at Feb 28, 2006 17:39

Most IMCs, when the editors decide that a post should be removed from the newswire, move it to a "hidden" page where it can still be read by anyone who wants to browse that page. When a post is egregious enough to warrant being removed from the server altogether, the title, author and reason for deletion are posted on a "deleted" page. This permits readers to see the editorial process in action.

Portland IMC has a hidden file page, rather cutely named "compost", and most of the detritus does end up there, but the compost isn't used in a consistent manner.

Posts sometimes mysteriously disappear from the newswire, are nowhere to be found in the news archive or the search function, but never show up in the compost bin. They simply vaporize into unposts.

The rhyme or reason behind this is very difficult to deduce. Sometimes it seems that the editors there never met a paranoid conspiracy theory or a pseudoscience crank they didn't want to take to their bosom; depending on the day of the week or phase of the moon a skeptical comment, especially one which cites evidence or shows actual knowledge of the subject at hand, has no better than a 50/50 chance of ever making it to the newswire.

OTOH, the most recent instance of The Incredible Disappearing Post I've seen was a stone-cold crank screed.

If you read the newsire at Porland Indy every day, you could well come away with the impression that people who self-identify as "activists" are all people who believe that the truth value of an argument is determined by how well it comports with their ideological preconceptions, in short, people who don't know how to think.

What good anyone thinks they are doing by creating that image is a mystery to me.

oh, BTW, nessie, there is no need for nor purpose in trying to make every discussion about IMC editorial policies be all about you and your enemies. You have your very own personal sandbox in which you can play Chief Party Ideologist to your heart's content.

Try staying there.

Enough is enough! Which side are you on??
Posted by: Frank at Feb 28, 2006 18:38

Used to be that I thought it useful to have an occasional nazi post, i.e., it was a convenient way one could check up on their propaganda methods, public appeals, etc. But no more. If we want to check up on them we can go to THEIR sites. They shouldn’t be allowed to further destroy this site.

Coming in a close second in destroying this site are all the Zionist, anti-Semitic, and anti-Muslim posts. Thus, the guy who spams us about his “shmekele” should go. The imposter Zorro should go. And if the real Zorro is so decayed that he chooses to not figure out the difference between Zionism and Jewish people, he should go. Further, one of the trolls should go. (This question of imposters has been handled so badly that I can’t right now remember which!)

Actually, I know that 2-3 years ago there were already young people abandoning SIMC because of racist posts. Then these were mainly coming from Zionists and anti-Semites. What would they think NOW?

Migrating to PDX Indymedia is only a “last and worst” case solution. Yes, it’s a better site, but it we don’t want to fill it up with a lot of stuff that’s really only of Seattle area interest. The issue is that the SIMC staff has to TAKE A STAND, and ACT! Contrary to liberalism and social democracy, there can be no neutrality in the class struggle. Try it and see what you get---victory for the likes of Hitler, Bush….and even little helpers of the rich like the NW nazis destroying SIMC. The old working-class refrain “which side are you on?” seems applicable to the situation.

Now SIMC may need more help monitoring the newswire, which I assume is a tiring and thankless job. If so, I DON’T think just relying on posting something on Indy., with its fast-dwindling readership, is enough. No, it used to be that people from the staff came out to demonstrations with flyers informing activists of the site, urging them to use it and come to meetings, etc. (In fact their activity is what motivated me to first look at the site.) I think that it’s again time for such action. For, example, if you want more volunteers, come to the March 18 and May Day demonstrations with an appeal to anti-war and left-wing activists. But don’t come trying to justify all the racist garbage, you won’t get many volunteers.

I entirely agree with Ben: THIS THREAD SHOULD BE IN THE CENTER COLUMN!

the real one
Posted by: TheTroll at Feb 28, 2006 19:43

So, where do you think I fit into this thread? I have been called a racist because I refuse to appease murderous thieving Zionist crusaders. I also point out that you don't need to be a racist to respect our Palestinian neighbor's basic human right NOT to be destoryed by Zionist crusaders, or anyone else for that matter. But you do need to be a racist to be an appeaser or an enabler of Zionist crusaders who have never stopped stealing Palestinian lands (even as you read these words) and have never hesitated to MURDER palestinians who resist the Zionist's continuing offenses, as well as Palestinians who were just in the wrong place as defined by the Zionist crusaders.

It isn't like there is a NICE way to witness against murderous thieves and thier Democrap and Republitrash supporters who have sold out America's peace for thier own political gain.

regardles of this little bump on the US indy scene - you are all miles ahead of UK indy. the precious anal team of mods have succeeded in making the hidden section the most interesting to read. Seattle is fine - open slather policies do not work.
