A Thousand Students Walk Out In Seattle

Students Protest War

Yesterday at least a thousand students walked out of Seattle area middle schools, high schools and colleges to protest military recruiting on local campuses and the US war in Iraq. Some estimates ranged as high as 2,000 young people demonstrated throughout the city at three different locations.

They gathered first at Seattle Central Community College, then marched from Westlake Center to the Capitol Hill neighborhood where organizers held peace and justice workshops and screened documentary films. Performers entertained the crowd of mostly teenagers with spoken word artists and hip hop.

Some students faced punitive measures from school administrators for attending the demonstrations,
while other schools allowed them to leave class as long as parents signed permission forms.

One group of students from Garfield High School complained that they were harrassed by school administrators. Officers from the Seattle Police Department arrested two of the students leaving the demonstration.

Groups organizing the events were Youth Against War And Racism, and the World Can't Wait Coalition.

Earlier this year students in Seattle demonstrated at two local military revruiting centers,
shutting them down for the day.

Boring

The American people are tired of your rallies. We are tired of your shrill speeches. We are tired of your ignorance as a guise to impose socialism. We are tired of your support of people who openly and boastfully target civilians in Arabic while they accuse their defensive opponents of doing just that in English.

So you keep up with your social gatherings. You made the local version of Pravda unlike all your other demonstrations. Dont get your hopes up. It was just the youth factor that gave your friends at the paper a legit excuse to print it on the front page. Certainly that was the least sold newsstand papers in months.

THE PEOPLE HAVE HEARD YOU.

I dont like Bush much my self. Most of America dislikes Bush. He is far to the left of JFK. We want someone who talks fast using at least a 12th grade level of English without the long pauses in mid sentance like Hilary Clinton is so apt to do. The last time that was used was Ronald Reagan and Bush 1 to some extent. But the death campers like you people of the International Socialist American Workers' Party are much worse.

well, not all of us have given up

so, the youth movement was indeed unreliable during the election as we saw, but it is nice that at least some students are getting into the streets. i am a college student who voted for john kerry (what a douche bag he was, but better than the moron) twice and have demonstrated every time i have had the chance. it may seem hopeless, but i would rather be trampeled on by our government than all together absent. keep in the streets, stay mobilized, stay organized, stay vocal because our government (democrat and republican) cannot ignore us forever.

No votes for imperialism!

Let's do whatever we can to ensure the youth anti-war movement remains COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE to the liberal-imperialist politicians. No votes for imperialism!

Our voices are not "heard" through voting or even letter-writing. What matters is that we continue to build larger, more powerful protests and work to target the imperialist (monopoly capitalist) system which is the source of all these terrible wars, domestic repression and much more.

Thank you for protesting and standing with the people of the world against "our own" ruling class.

yo, editors!

openly israel-uber-alles, "i hate bush because he's not fascist enough" nonsense should be deleted

Do you even know what Facisimo is?
Posted by: spit on the left at Nov 05, 2005 20:36

So now JFK is a fascist, eh? What a maroon.

You know there will be a re-claining of this country very soon. The people who respect those who built it, the people who continue to build it, the people who want to preserve it for the future.

The left wants this country destroyed or remade into a international socialist (rather than national socialist) state. You filthy creatures with your deluded Muslim street fighters will be crushed.

When the country is set right again, don't think other fellow travelers in the treason movement like the ACLU can help. They too will be with you awaiting capital trials of treason.

No mercy will be shown to those guilty of treason. Hell, you wont even get a head stone.

I want one of you indys to defend the double-talkers identified in this guys comment. The Muslims spew hate that would make Hitler blush in Arabic and then cry like beaten women about the crusaders in the English-speaking press.

Whats up with that?

I got rid of my last car seven years ago.

How many people who walked out of school were driven to school in the first place?  If you want to protest the war, then STOP DRIVING.

You maybe right that the people who built this country may take it back. Everything that was build was built by working people of every race and most every national orgin. It has been the rich cpaitalist class that controled all that production, and yes the time may come when we working people take control of our labor and produce for the well-being of everyone and not just for a few greedly parasites. Then we will see the end to these wars that benefit only the rich and people like you will have nowhere to turn but the deep smelly holes that you came out of.

Too Much Production
Posted by: knappster at Nov 06, 2005 19:13

Arthur writes: "The time may come when we working people take control of our labor and produce for the well-being of everyone and not just for a few greedly parasites."

Arthur,

I suggest to you that the biggest problem with the modern industrial world is not unfair distribution. Instead, it's TOO MUCH production. As you work on the docks, you have probably noticed that the oceans are dying. Also, the polar ice caps are melting. Also, toxic chemicals are building up in the world. And so on ...

War is the almost inevitable result of competing desires for material wealth on a finite planet. That's why I say it's hypocritical for people to protest war without curbing their own consumption -- in this case, actually DRIVING to a site where they protest against a war for oil! The apparent cluelessness of such behavior is breathtaking.

Perhaps you agree. In any case, I suggest that you focus on production (and consumption) itself, not so much on who controls the production and who gets the unsustainable wealth.

production for needs
Posted by: Arthur J. Miller at Nov 07, 2005 05:20

It is true that there is too much production of some things, who needs all those SUVs, but on the other hand there is not enough production of other things like good homes for all. Who controls production is the important question because as long as a few control production for their own wealth while many people around the world go without their needs, production will be based upon that and there will be no control over too much production of unneeded stuff and stuff that harms Mother Earth. I avocate product for needs, control of production by those that do the work, and production that is earth safe. And no production of war goods and no production for the capitalists.

1. If your kid is telling you he/she is going to draft resistance meetings when he goes out: since there is no draft to resist-- he/she's probably going to Young Republican meetings to pick up chicks or learning to be a Protest Warrior, and doesn't want you to know.

2. If he/she is, indeed, a "draft resistor" as you said, no wonder you're proud-- you'd be the only parent in the world of a "resistor".

resistor-
n : an electrical device that resists the flow of electrical current [syn: resistance]

resister
n 1: someone who systematically obstructs some action that others want to take [syn: obstructionist, obstructor, obstructer, thwarter] 2: someone who offers opposition [syn: adversary, antagonist, opponent, opposer] [ant: agonist]

A kid who's an electrical device or a kid who's an obstructionist? If it's the first definition, call Ripley's! Mine is more often the latter.

Back to topic:
(Also if your kid stays in class, instead of cutting to protest, he's more likely to be able to start a new family tradition of knowing how to spell)!

There is American Pride even in Seattle, WA
Posted by: Proud American at Nov 12, 2005 16:24

The walk out of Seattle students in protest of the war is really a red flag to all in the Seattle area! With Seattle Schools having the worse test scores and performance I can't believe that parents supported thier children missing class time for this ridiculous movement! George Bush is not perfect and Americans don't have to agree with him but I want to know why these organizers of the "student walk out" isn't trying to get Bush impeached? No one died in the oval office under the last President but he was impeached so what's really behind all the ruckus in Seattle now? This is just more Seattle trouble making and ignorant smoke screens. I have never seen such obtuse people and now we have yet another generation of dullards being groomed - great. What did the walk out do but stole valuable classtime from the students meanwhile other young people are giving their lives for us all - everyone who participated in this "walk out" should be ashamed of themselves. Thanks for making Seattle live up to its name of the Stupid Capitol of America.

King and Snohimish countys sure are working hard to be the garbage dump of the nation. It seems the more people that populate the west side of the state. The more that stupid virus spreads. Just keep it over there we don't need you people over on the east side.
